Baby Hamsters

Baby hamsters are called pups. They are tiny, pink and very fragile when they are born.

Born pink and tiny

Hamster pups are born with no fur and with their eyes closed. A mum can have a big litter at once.

Leave them be

A mother hamster needs peace and quiet. Grown-ups should not touch or move the nest in the first couple of weeks, or the mum may get stressed.

Fur and eyes

Fur grows in over the first week or two, and eyes open at about two weeks old.

Ready for solid food

Pups begin nibbling seeds and other hamster food at about two weeks old, and are fully weaned at around 3 to 4 weeks.
